What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is increased pressure within the eyes, eventually leading to gradual blindness. No noticeable symptoms of glaucoma occur in its early stage yet it is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness within the United States.
In its advanced form, symptoms include:
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Severe eye and head pain
- Sudden sight loss
Glaucoma does tend to run in the family. If members of your family have glaucoma, you are at a higher risk of getting glaucoma compared to the rest of the population. Consequently, it is very important that individuals get a comprehensive eye exam and follow up with their primary physicians. Early detection through complete eye exams is the key to protecting your vision from damage caused by glaucoma. Treatment options include eye drop medication, SLT laser treatments, surgery.
